I was working in the garden this morning and noticed that I need new tomato cages. I am not sure how old they are. Maybe 10 years? They seem to leaning one direction or another. I know in years past when they get so heavy from the plants and fruit that they can blow over in strong wind. Yes, they usually do survive.
When I first started gardening, I had the metal cages, but I grow tomato trees so the plants needed more support. There was a great article in the Denver Post Grow section on trellises and other structures. I knew I need something like that instead. My nice husband built my current ones. I am sure I can get him to make me new ones for next year.
