The thing about gardening is a gardener only has so much control. You can plan and plan, do your homework and select the best plants for your environment and that is about it. After that other forces take control. I was more ambitious this year and tried to pack in as many plants as possible. Overall things have gone well and I have learned more about spacing and what what should go where in the future, but there a few things that just didn't work.
1. The artichoke plant has not flowered. I understand why it might not flower the first year, but I successfully overwintered the plant and still no flowers for the second year. I searched online and there is nothing that explains why it won't flower. It is a very healthy plant, lots of sun, plenty of water, and few bugs. I just don't understand so it leaves me skeptical to grow another one in the future.
No flowers |
2. There is an arbor to the entrance of the vegetable garden. This year I chose a certain variety of morning glories - Kikyozaki morning glories from Baker Creek. They sprouted just fine, but they have barely grown. I have watered them, fertilized them and said kind things and still they are maybe 8 inches tall. I finally let other morning glories that self sowed to fill in the space. No these did not crowd out the Kikyozaki plants.
Even smaller than described |
3. No cosmos in the vegetable garden in the future. They hog too much space and then when the wind blows too hard they snap and smuch other plants around them. Now I have a huge hole in the front bed. Don't get me wrong they are pretty but . . . . . . I am thinking I might sprinkle some seed in the perennials beds and see what happens.
Big hole, smuched zinnias |
I think those are three biggest pet peeves for this year. Not too bad.
