A Bad Year for Trees

The oak trees in the backyard have had a great growing season.  They are healthy and put on tons of  new growth.  The catalpa and ash tree have not done so well.  The catalpa tree lost a fourth of its leaves early summer.  We think it has some sort of wilt.  It did this several years ago but the leaves came back during that same summer, but no such luck this year.  I suspect all of the limbs that lost leaves will be dead next spring which is really too bad since it is a great tree.

Then the poor ash tree has been struggling for years.  It has bores.  We have been able to keep the tree alive for 4-5 years with the bores and we have chemically treated it (which I am not a fan of).  The center section started turning in mid-August and dropped its leaves.  The rest seems to be doing okay, but the bark in the front looks horrible.  You can see where the bores have worked their way out of the tree.

I think the neighbors see more of the dead.

Lots of dead to cut out next spring.

The ash lost a large limb in the center several years ago.
