I don't know how many years I have been starting vegetables by seed. Too many to count. I have learned some important things over the years.
1. Start the vegetables early. The suggested dates for starting seeds are merely suggestions. I always start them sooner.
2. Lots of light. The south facing bedroom in my house is the best for seed starting and plant growing.
3. Use a heating mat. I discovered this in the last couple of years. I can get the tomatoes to start well and keep growing and growing without the heating mat, but peppers and eggplant need that warmth all of the time to keep growing.
4. Use the biggest/tallest plastic cover you can find. For years I used the small plastic cover for the seed starting trays. The plants need to stay under the plastic cover longer. The bigger/taller cover allows for this. Once they start to outgrow the cover, it is time to replant into larger pots.

Jessie had to help with the set up |

I was afraid Jessie was going to sit on top of the plastic dome. Luckily she didn't. |
