Yampa River Botanic Park

Yesterday, I made a very quick trip to Steamboat Springs.  After my meeting I was going to take a power nap and come home, but instead I made a trip to the Yampa River Botanic Park.

It was a beautiful day in Steamboat.  There was a pleasant breeze rustling the leaves. I wasn't disappointment by my choice.

Fun facts about the Botanic Park

  • Elevation is 6,800 feet
  • Average snowfall is 15 feet.
  • Snow covers the ground from November to April with little summer rain
  • Winter temps can be as low as -40F
  • Approximately 59 frost free days
  • USDA Hardiness Zone 4
  • Few trees grow well except the natives
This grove of native narrow leaf cottonwood trees was planted in 2002.  It is located just outside the entrance.

Garden art

Weeping birch - I was hoping this picture would have turn out better.  I thought this was a cool tree.

I loved the hummingbirds on the side of the trellis.
